Bundesliga 2026/27: Dortmund Set the Pace in a Goal Avalanche

Four matchdays in, the Bundesliga has hit the international break with its pulse racing. There is a new name at the summit, a familiar superstar in sparkling form, a handful of overachievers and, above all, goals: so many goals that the record books have already been dusted off. Here is where Germany's top flight stands before the action resumes.

Dortmund's perfect start

Borussia Dortmund are the only team with a flawless record: four games, four wins, 12 points, nine goals scored and just two conceded. Niko Kovač's side clinched the latest victory 1-0 in Stuttgart, with Maximilian Beier converting a Jobe Bellingham assist in the 70th minute. It is the first time since 2015/16, under Thomas Tuchel, that BVB have won their opening four league games, and the first time since May 2023 that they sit alone at the top. After finishing 16 points behind Bayern last season, the message from the Signal Iduna Park is clear: this time, Dortmund intend to stay in the race.

Bayern and the Olise show

Two points behind, Bayern Munich boast the league's best attack with 14 goals. The standout night was a 7-0 demolition of Union Berlin, in which Michael Olise scored a hat-trick and added an assist. The Frenchman, last season's Player of the Season, already has four league goals and leads the Bundesliga in shots and dribble attempts. "Michael Olise is the whole package," said coach Vincent Kompany. Harry Kane, meanwhile, has passed the milestone of 100 Bundesliga goals.

Freiburg and the surprise packages

Level on points with Bayern, SC Freiburg remain unbeaten under Julian Schuster and have scored 12 goals, a club record after four fixtures. Yuito Suzuki set the tone with an opening-day hat-trick against Werder Bremen. Augsburg are fourth, with Michael Gregoritsch becoming the club's all-time leading Bundesliga scorer, while Bayer Leverkusen beat RB Leipzig 2-0 thanks in part to Patrik Schick, the only player to score in all four rounds. Perhaps the most heart-warming story belongs to SV Elversberg: the league's smallest club, playing their first-ever Bundesliga season, sit seventh.

A goal avalanche

The numbers are staggering. After 36 matches the league has produced 137 goals, an average of 3.8 per game. Only two seasons have started more prolifically: 1984/85 with 140 goals and 2023/24 with 138. If the current rate holds, the all-time record of 3.6 goals per game, set in 1983/84, would fall.

Trouble at the bottom

At the other end, Borussia Mönchengladbach are still waiting for their first point after four defeats. Union Berlin have just one point and a goal difference of minus 13, while Hamburg have scored only twice. The break offers a welcome chance to regroup.

What comes next

The league returns on the weekend of 9–11 October. Bayern travel to fourth-placed Augsburg on Saturday at 15:30 CEST, while Dortmund host Werder Bremen. Then circle 31 October in the calendar: Der Klassiker between Bayern and Dortmund at the Allianz Arena could already shape the title race.
